THE RICH YOUNG RULER

MATTHEW 19:16-22

16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good[a] Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good?[b] No one is good but One, that is, God.[c] But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

18 He said to Him, “Which ones?”

Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ 19 ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[d] and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”[e]

20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth.[f] What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

STEP #1 – SEEK ETERNAL LIFE

CONFESSION

Romans 10:9-10 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

3 steps to salvation

• We must confess that Jesus is Lord.

• You must believe God raised Jesus from the dead.

• We must believe with heart and confess with mouth.

Psalm 103:10-14 New Living Translation (NLT)

10 He does not punish us for all our sins;
    he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.
11 For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
    is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
12 He has removed our sins as far from us
    as the east is from the west.
13 The Lord is like a father to his children,
    tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
14 For he knows how weak we are;
    he remembers we are only dust.

STEP #2 – GOD ALONE IS GOOD

John 14:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Spiritual Transformation – The Holy Spirit changes the condition of our spirit, alters the operation of the soul, and reverses the function of the body.

• Change is a transformational phenomenon and process that makes us what we were created to be. Our lifestyle, language, behaviors, and decisions are directed and influenced by a supernatural presence in a natural environment.
• The Greek word for transform is metamorphoo; you undergo a complete inward change caused by the power of God that results in something being extremely different externally. Transformation is an inside out experience

STEPS #3 – KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS

James 2:8 refers to Love your neighbor as yourself as the “Royal law.” The person who loves his neighbor will have excellent relations with everyone and will experience love, joy, peace---the abundant life.
